Hurricane Irma: Visual guide

The most powerful Atlantic storm in a decade has caused widespread destruction across the Caribbean and left at least 19 people dead. Irma, a category five hurricane, has been packing winds of up to 295km/h (185mph).

Irma has already left the small island of Barbuda "barely habitable" and St Martin almost destroyed. It has also pummelled the Turks and Caicos Islands.

Officials in Florida in the US, where Irma is heading, have warned the storm will "devastate" either Florida or neighbouring states.

Irma is breaking weather records

At its peak, Irma had winds topping 295km/h - making it the strongest storm on record in the Atlantic Ocean, outside of the Caribbean and Gulf of Mexico.

According to Phil Klotzbach, research scientist at Colorado State University's Department of Atmospheric Science, Irma's top wind speeds were tied with the second-strongest maximum winds of all time for an Atlantic hurricane. Irma matches a 1935 storm in the Florida Keys and Hurricane Gilbert in 1988 and Wilma in 2005.

Only one hurricane, Allen in 1980, has recorded stronger winds, at 190 mph, he said.

However, Irma has broken Allen's record for sustained winds. It has maintained maximum wind speeds of 295km/h for longer than any other Atlantic Hurricane.

The hurricane's winds have moderated slightly, however, at up to 165mph (270km/h).

Irma grew in strength over a few days

The remnants of Hurricane Harvey, which hit in late August, could still be seen by satellite when Irma made its way across the Atlantic towards the Caribbean.

Irma was just a category two storm seen here on 2 September, but soon became category three.

Irma grew stronger quickly because of a combination of very warm water, high levels of mid-level relative humidity, and vertical wind conditions, meteorologists say.

Between 2 and 5 September Irma strengthened from a category three to a category five storm, the highest possible level.

By 6 September, the hurricane was bearing down on the Caribbean, battering many island communities. It continued its trail of destruction through 7 and 8 September.

Irma is being followed by storm Jose, which has been upgraded to hurricane status.

Irma's clouds are very, very cold

Infrared data from the Nasa-National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration's Suomi NPP satellite on 7 September revealed very cold, very high, powerful thunderstorms stretching around Irma's northern, eastern and southern sides.

Storms with cloud tops reaching very low temperatures have the capability to generate "very heavy rainfall", according to Nasa.

Cloud-top temperatures at the centre of the storm were as cold as 190 kelvin (minus 83.1C/117.7F), Nasa said.

Irma is generating a lot of rain

The eye of the storm is about 35 miles across and is generating "extreme rainfall".

Nasa's rainfall analysis showed rain falling at a rate of more than 274mm (10.8in) per hour on 5 September in the solid ring of storms within Irma's eye.

The powerful storms rotating around the eye were really tall, reaching altitudes greater than 12.5km (7.75 miles).

But the tallest thunderstorms were found south west of Irma's eye, reaching heights of more than 16.2km (10 miles), Nasa said.

Sea temperatures below Irma are warm

Warm oceans, along with wind speed and direction, are the two key ingredients that fuel and sustain hurricanes.

As Irma approaches the Bahamas and Florida, it will be passing over waters that are warmer than 30C (86F) - hot enough to sustain a category five storm, according to Nasa scientists.

Hurricane Irma has hit many of the Caribbean's islands and is expected to reach the US on Sunday.

Storm Jose has formed further out in the Atlantic behind Irma, and has been upgraded to hurricane status.

And storm Katia, in the Gulf of Mexico, has also been upgraded. A warning was in effect for the coast of the Mexican state of Veracruz.

The impact could be 'catastrophic'

The howling winds and rough seas of Irma are expected to cause widespread devastation.

The National Hurricane Center says Irma will bring "life-threatening" winds, storm surges and rainfall.

Storm surge risk

Another deadly risk from hurricanes comes in the form of storm surges.

Huge volumes of water are pushed by hurricane force winds. Where they meet land, the water surges inshore at levels far exceeding normal tides.

The National Hurricane Center issued warnings for possible storm surges raising water levels from between 30-90cm (3-5ft) in northern Haiti and the northern Dominican Republic to between 4.5-6m (15-20ft) in the south-eastern Bahamas and Turks and Caicos Islands.

According to some sources, Zimbabwe has send some Government officials to discuss issues affecting Zimbabwean students on the island, Cyprus.

The meeting will be held at Cyprus International University on Tuesday 12th September. And all Zimbabweans are expected to attend the meeting.

Many reports about Zimbabwe students in Cyprus had been heard and discussed in the country. Leaving parents and gaurdains in despair as they thought, that they destroyed the lives of their kids.

Out of poverty and desparations, to at least live a better life, many Zimbabwean found theirselves in Cyprus as means of Hunting for a fat bull.

Stories had been said and heard which by no means tarnish Cyprus's image , nevertheless it is just to deny that great champions and masters are been raised in the same environment which they so claim to be a '' desert''.

Through this 'investigational visit' Zimbabweans have to come in their numbers and showcase to the world the positive side of the land.

National Council convenes to discuss way forward in Cyprus issue

President Nicos Anastasiades chairs, on Monday, a meeting of the National Council, the top advisory body to the President, comprising parliamentary party leaders, with discussions expected to focus on the way forward in the Cyprus issue.

The meeting is set to begin at 0930 hours local tie (0630 GMT).

UN-backed talks that took place between June 28-July 7, in Crans-Montana, Switzerland, ended inconclusively. Peace talks aim to reunite Cyprus, divided since the 1974 Turkish invasion, under a federal roof.

Members of the National Council are set to exchange views on the state of affairs and the next steps which should be taken.

The National Council will meet again on Tuesday in the presence of Greek Foreign Minister Nikos Kotzias.

Great Zimbabwe University Psychology Department Since 2006: A Subjective reflection beyond controversy.

On my arrival at GZU then called Masvingo State University under the leadership of Professor O. Maravanyika the department chairman was Mr. P. Mudhovozi now Professor Mudhovozi. In 2006 the programme in psychology had been married to Human Resources modules to form a double barrel at the end so, initially one would take two modules in psychology two in Human Resources, one in sociology, which Mr. Tshuma at that time took us through the tormenting sociological perspectives, I had a hard time. I’m also via my subjective experiences of the belief that non-core courses for psychology students should proffer a plethora of choices which would be relevant to the choice of vocation of the students for example choices for options should include modules in law, rural development and anthropology to cater for those who might be interested to pursue different careers given in psychology not just learning one area which might not be of use in career choices. The programme would finish as 3.2.2 this would end one doing psychology and human resources modules in part 2.

Early in 2008 Professor Mudhovozi was the Dean of the Faculty of Psychology then, he was one of the two psychology lecturers within the department who had a Masters Degree together with Mrs. GKN Shonhiwa who is the current Deputy Dean of the faculty of Social Science a position which she has held from late 2011 up to now. The rest of the teaching staff members had Honours Degree qualifications and some had General Degree qualifications who were former GZU students. In the year 2009 GZU Psychology department welcomed the second coming of Mr. Zirima who was then a holder of a Bsc Honours Psychology degree from University of Zimbabwe (UZ). He later on graduated to become Msc Psychology degree holder from the same university. He is now the chairperson of the department and a PhD candidate. In 2007 the psychology program changed from 3.2.2 to 3.2.1 meaning to say that the program would end with a psychology major doing only psychology programs in the last year having dropped human resources courses in the end of the second year and sociology in the end of the first year.

In 2011 GZU psychology welcomed aboard Mr. J. Chimunhu a holder of two Honours degrees from UZ and Fort Hare University respectively and also a holder of MSC counselling Psychology degree. Mr. Chimunhu was the only holder of MSc Counselling Psychology degree in the department at that time with his predecessors all being holders of MSc Educational Psychology from UZ. I aver to state that his coming had the golden hand of Mr. Zirima in 2010 who was then the psychology coordinator, Mr. Nyanga being the Dean of the faculty of social Sciences, Mr. Mashavira the Chairperson of the Department. Mr. Chimunhu brought changes within the department of psychology, it is believed that he had a handy input in the establishment of the Masters in Counselling Psychology for which in that same year he was ordained the first chairman of the department of psychology, after it was separated from psychology of work namely Human Resources. It is also interesting that the Master’s program took the same name as his Master’s program which he obtained from Fort Hare University.

The combine effort from Mr Zirima and Mr Chimunhu with the support of other faculty members is believed to have conceptualized the establishment of the Special honors program in psychology to cater for multitudes of students who had long graduated without an honors qualification which is a mandatory qualification for registration as a psychologist and to most if not all psychology Masters programs. The qualification became the first post graduate programme in psychology on offer in 2011 August with its first intake registering eight students who all successfully graduated in 2012 after completion of one year study.

Currently psychology at GZU is now a four year programme, with attachment or work related studies in the 3^rd year of study for students undertaking the programme. It is the same phenomenon with Midlands State University who started with such a structure in its psychology degree programme, and University of Zimbabwe has taken such shape from its psychology degree programme, a paradigm shift from its three year psychology programme. I am of the view that psychology giving a work related aspect makes it improper with reasons, with only two year study of psychological courses a student who finds attachment at a clinical setting cannot be allowed to undergo internship, ethically one is bound to be competent and the little psychological training during the two year course cannot help in issues of this matter, hence it means they will learn most of the time as what I would call ‘observer workers’. More to this ethical dilemma is the fact that some tests in psychology require licensing which require certain level of qualifications which they, are not allowed to touch an or administer in their undergraduate status like those which require license B and C qualifications. It is my wish that for psychology the four year programme be devoted to learning key concepts and issues. Students would then under these circumstances undergo internship as part of registration as psychologists, they will in so doing find their work related learning without infringement enshrined in the professional ethics of the discipline of psychology.

His Excellency Professor Mudhovozi’s coming in 2015, had his academic presence contributing to the establishment and requirements needed for the Master’s program in psychology to take off in fulfillment of ZIMCHE requirements. It is also of note to take into perspective that the master’s program has been informed by University of Venda, where he was a lecturer when he attained his PhD qualifications. It is interesting that GZU currently offers a D PHIL in psychology and one of its supervisors is Professor Mudhovozi and already it has students undertaking it.

I think it’s a history a long one I hope.

Nicki Minaj & Remy Ma To Battle It Out For Best Female Hip Hop Artist At 2017 BET Awards

LOS ANGELES, CA – The BET Awards, which will be held this year June 25 at the Nokia Theater in Los Angeles, released the nominations Monday (May 15). Perhaps one of the biggest storylines of the evening will be the Nicki Minaj and Remy Ma beef.

Although Remy Ma recently claimed that the “dust has settled,” she will go up against the reigning champion for the title of Best Female Hip Hop Artist. Nicki Minaj has won the award every year since 2010. Before her run, the Terror Squad vet did lay claim to the title. Other women included in the category this year are Missy Elliott, Young M.A, and Cardi B.

Beyoncé leads all nominees with seven nods. Queen Bey is up for Best Female R&B/Pop Artist and twice for Best Collaboration with Kendrick Lamar for “Freedom” and DJ Khaled’s “Shining” with her husband Jay Z. She’s also nominated for Video of the Year for “Sorry,” which gave her a nod for Video Director of the Year alongside Kahlil Joseph. Her critically-acclaimed LEMONADEalbum is up for Album of the Year.

Chance The Rapper is up for four awards, including Album of the Year for HipHopDX’s Best Album of 2016, Coloring Book, and Best New Artist where he’ll compete against Young M.A, 21 Savage, Cardi B and Khalid.

Migos gets, yep, a trio of nominations. Quavo, Takeoff and Offset are up for Best Group and their smash hit “Bad and Boujee” with Lil Uzi Vert is in the running for Best Collaboration and Video of the Year.
